If you've been curious about the Pelvic Floor Chair, you're in good company. It's one of the treatments people ask me about most, and I love being able to offer it here at The Age-Well Room in Maroochydore.
I'm Bec, the owner. In this post I'll walk you through what the chair is, how it's designed to help, and what a session is really like, so you know exactly what to expect when you come in.
What is the Pelvic Floor Chair?
The Pelvic Floor Chair uses electromagnetic muscle stimulation. You simply sit on the chair, fully clothed, and it creates a focused electromagnetic field that reaches the muscles of your pelvic floor and gently prompts them to contract and relax, again and again, without you having to do the squeezing yourself.
It's non-invasive, so there's nothing to insert and no need to undress. You just sit back for the session.
How it can help your pelvic floor
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports your bladder and bowel, and for women, the uterus too. Like any muscles, they can lose strength over time, whether that's after having babies, through menopause, or simply with the busyness of life.
The chair is designed to give these muscles a thorough workout, with many repeated contractions in each session, to help strengthen them. Many clients find it a comfortable, easy way to look after their pelvic floor, and it can sit nicely alongside any pelvic floor exercises you're already doing.
Who often comes in
People come to see me about the Pelvic Floor Chair at all stages of life, including:
- Women after having babies, once their doctor or midwife has cleared them.
- Women through perimenopause and menopause, when many notice changes in their pelvic floor.
- Active people, such as runners, gym-goers and anyone who loves their sport, who want to keep their pelvic floor strong.
- Men, who have a pelvic floor too (more on that below).
- Anyone who'd like some extra support with looking after their pelvic floor.
What a session feels like
Each session takes about 30 minutes. You stay fully clothed, sit back and relax. Most people feel a tingling sensation and a series of strong contracting or lifting feelings in the pelvic floor. I start gently and adjust the intensity with you, so it stays comfortable.
Many clients use the time to read, chat or simply enjoy a quiet half hour. Afterwards, you can head straight back to your day. Some people notice mild muscle tiredness or tingling afterwards, much like after a workout.
A typical course and maintenance
A course is usually 8 to 12 sessions, starting with two sessions a week. After that, maintenance sessions help you keep up the good work, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or every two months, depending on what suits you. We'll plan this together at your free consultation.
What it costs
Pelvic Floor Chair sessions are $450 for a pack of 5. If you're over 65, ask me about our over-65 discount.
There's no health fund rebate for the Pelvic Floor Chair, and it isn't covered by Medicare at our clinic. Your first consultation is free.
You can read more on our Pelvic Floor Chair cost page and The Pelvic Floor Chair page.
What about men?
Men have a pelvic floor too, and are welcome to use the chair to help strengthen it. If you've had prostate surgery, check with your GP or specialist first.
Is it right for me?
The Pelvic Floor Chair isn't suitable for everyone. It may not suit you if you're pregnant, have a pacemaker, or have metal in your hips or spine. If you've recently had a baby, please wait until your doctor or midwife has cleared you. And if your symptoms are new, getting worse or painful, please see your GP first.
Results vary from person to person, which is why every plan starts with a free consultation. We'll go through your health history together and check the chair is a good fit for you.
